One in three men will experience premature ejaculation. Treatment can help.
What is Premature Ejaculation?
Premature ejaculation is a lack of control over ejaculation resulting in an orgasm sooner than you or your partner would like.
Ejaculation may happen as soon as foreplay begins, on penetration, or within 1 to 2 minutes of commencing intercourse. It may be a lifelong problem or develop later in life. Whatever the cause it can cause distress and create tension between a man and his partner.
Remember it’s normal to have the occasional loss of control. However, if you have ongoing premature ejaculation it’s recommended that you seek medical advice.
There are both physical and psychological causes for premature ejaculation. Anxiety compounds the problem and premature ejaculation may occur with failing confidence in the erection. Occasionally problems with the nerve supply to the penis, as in diabetes, may result in premature ejaculation.

What happens at a consultation?
Every man is different but here’s what to expect from a typical treatment plan with Specialist GP, Dr Alistair Somerville.
Our initial consultation
At our initial consultation, we’ll review your medical history including current health, chronic conditions, medications and lifestyle factors. We’ll discuss physiological factors such as stress and anxiety as well as your premature ejaculation experience.
Once your condition and its severity have been diagnosed we’ll devise a customised treatment plan to get your erectile dysfunction under control.
Your treatment program will vary depending on the cause and whether it is lifelong or acquired and may include:
- ducation and exercises to prolong sexual intercourse
- local anaesthetics that reduce penile sensitivity
- medication that increases the time to ejaculation
- psychological counselling
Ongoing Support and Follow-up
During the initial period of treatment, we’ll closely monitor your progress and together we’ll refine your treatment to achieve the best possible outcome.
