Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is common. It becomes increasingly common with age, affecting 40% of men over the age of 40*.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile Dysfunction (impotence) is the frequent inability to get and/or maintain an erection.

There is no need to worry about the occasional failed erection. This is normal and is generally a result of other factors such as excessive alcohol, tiredness or stress. However, if failed erections continue for over three months it may be time to seek medical advice.

There are various causes of erectile dysfunction, both physiological and physical including:

  • increasing age
  • medical conditions such as hypertension, heart disease and diabetes.
  • lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol and medications
  • prostate, bladder and bowel surgery

The sooner erectile dysfunction is treated, the better the outcome.

What happens at a consultation?

Every man is different but here’s what to expect from a typical treatment plan with Specialist GP, Dr Alistair Somerville.

Our initial consultation

At our initial consultation, we’ll review your medical history including current health, chronic conditions, medications and lifestyle factors. We’ll discuss physiological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression as well as the current erectile dysfunction symptoms you’re experiencing.

Once your condition and its severity have been diagnosed we’ll devise a customised treatment plan to get your erectile dysfunction under control.

Your treatment plan may include may one or a combination of the following:

  • short-acting tablets, such as sildenafil
  • long-acting tablets, such as tadalafil
  • injection therapy, a personalised mixture of medicine according to need
  • vacuum pumps
  • referral to a urologist for penile implant surgery, note this is for erection enhancement, but will not increase your size.

Ongoing Support and Follow-up

During the initial period of treatment, we’ll closely monitor your progress and together we’ll refine your treatment to achieve the best possible outcome.

Quickly and easily request repeat prescriptions via our online portal or email

Annual review to monitor progress.

And of course, if things change we are always here to help.
